TV star tees up at Selby Golf Club

July 12, 2024

Golf club members felt that there was something familiar about a visiting player at Selby Golf Club recently and indeed there was.

Playing alongside past captain Keith Houliston, on Wednesday, June 26, was Nicholas Ralph, the actor who plays James Herriot, in Channel 5’s reimagining of All Creatures Great and Small. Keith explained: “Nicholas came along at my invitation, during a day-off from filming. We played 18 excellent holes of golf and I have to say he plays very well. We play off the same handicap and he won 2&1.” “He met Len Carpenter who is 98 years old, and also a past captain of the club, and his wife Doreen, who is a big fan of All Creatures Great and Small. They were both delighted to have their photo taken with him.” The “real” James Herriot, the late author and vet Alf Wight, was also a keen golfer and a long-standing member of his local club Thirsk & Northallerton Golf Club. The new series of All Creatures Great & Small is believed to be coming to Channel 5 in late September.
